Home: Lost and Found

It is finally here! Our collaborative multimedia event is taking place on Sunday afternoon, September 17 at Artspace (50 Orange Street, New Haven, CT). Home: Lost and Found spotlights the refugee experience through art and music.

Hugo Kauder's story is one of many variations on a common theme. Like other refugee artists, Kauder sought to make connections with new people and places while maintaining a strong sense of his own past and legacy. For the music portion of the event, the exciting Brooklyn-based ensemble Sharq Attack will reimagine three lesser known works by Kauder: Variations on a Spanish FolksongA Chinese Melody, and selections from the Zweites Trio (for strings). All build upon preexisting melodies by expertly developing and combining them into new structures, giving the original music a fresh personal insight. In this spirit, Sharq Attack will adapt Kauder's music to their unique instrumentation  (oud, violin/viola, accordion, bass and percussion) and explore and expand its potential further through improvisation. The musicians will also perform other selections from their repertoire, which stems from the maqam tradition of the Middle East.

We are delighted to partner with the Wesleyan Center for the Arts, IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services), and esteemed Syrian artist Mohamad Hafez to co-present the concert as part of Home: Lost and Found, a special afternoon delving into art and refuge.

The gallery will open at 1:00 pm, followed by a panel discussion at 2:00 and musical performance at 3:00. The art exhibit will be open this weekend: Friday and Saturday from 12:00 - 8:00. The Sunday concert is sold out, but open hours will resume afterwards, from 4:00 - 6:00.
